This course is designed to introduce you to simple, deliberately low-tech methods of dyeing and print-making onto cotton and mixed-fibre fabrics. You will take white and unbleached cloth through a number of processes - dyeing, batik, block-printing, screen and mono-printing - each one building upon the colours and marks made through previous processes, making the surfaces intricate and either subtle or vibrant, depending on the choices you make along the way.
At the end of the week, you will bind samplers into a textile record book of all the processes learnt. You will also have built up a significant bank of unique pieces of cloth, designed by you and suitable for a whole range of future textile projects.
This week is excellent preparation for both of the following courses: Experimental Embroidery and
Embroidered Landscapes.
